Thinking of travelling to Mae Hong Son (On the grounds it's one place in Thailand we've never been) in August. Can anyone reccomend things to see and do, decent hotel etc? Travelling with Mrs and 12 year old daughter. Thanks.

Went there a few years ago and there is not a lot to see IMHO. Visit the hill tribes and the 'long necks' and other refugee camps, temple on the hill overlooking the airport and town, feed the fish in the pool near the two main temples in town and that was about all we found. There must be more but we never found it. Oh! and the mountain road to it is fun!

Thanks for the reply. How long ago since you went? We visited Golden Triangle and Mae Sai in April. I last went there 10 years ago and there has been a LOT of development.

About 5 years ago. It sticks in my mind mainly due to the appalling conditions the refugees lived in and the amount of military patrols checking vehilcles for border jumpers. They stopped us several times but no problems just a quick ckeck and waived us on.

Sounds interesting. Was there anything to do at night time or it is it a case of take a good book?

I too went there about 5 years ago and at the time it was a sleepy little town with not much to do as Lucky has indicated. We hired motor-cycles to get around which is always a great way to explore but as you've got a 12 year old with you, so this might not be practical. We stayed at the Fern Resort a few miles out of Mae Hong Son, though they did offer a free shuttle service to and from the town. At the time the town seemed to close come sunset with few restaurants open, though this may have changed.

Went there in January, only stayed a few days and really wished it could have been longer. There are many places to visit in the surrounding area, and I loved the town itself. Not too many farang tourists when I visited and was told that over the last 5 years or so Pai has become the main tourist town.
