I think maybe the way you leapt on to one word of my post distorted the way it was read by some people afterwards. I was merely warning about the dangers of pinning hopes on a relationship with any girl, particularly one who meets a lot of farangs, over a long distance. I've known quite a few hotel receptionists, over a long time. It's simply the case that they'll meet a lot of people. I've seen how Thai girls have guys in reserve, balance them. While the OP's heart may grow fonder, it's unwise to pin so much hope on one girl, WITHOUT being there.

Certainly not on all Thai forums, Tribal, there are plenty where you can exchange your 'war stories' to your heart's content, but it should be obvious that what you are referring to is not really an appropriate topic for one which prides itself on being a family-friendly one.

The OP does indeed need tread carefully, and you two guys are free to voice your opinions as far as your enlightenment to life in LoS is concerned. It is not a taboo subject by any means. Just remember, you only have your own experiences to judge things by.

Totally agree with you Phil. As you know I got burned but have met Nat without living in Thailand. However, my friends loving wives gave her the thumbs up after meeting and speaking to her and for that I am eternally grateful.

I think we're getting side-tracked. I posted because the guy's obviously got the hots for Thailand, is leaping back in after getting burned and in danger of doing the same thing as before. Thinking of getting evidence for another visit visa as soon as he's met a new girl? If it were me, I'd want someone to say: hold on, think about this! Possession is 9 tenths of the law. In most cases, you have to be around your girl because life goes on for her even if you're stuck in a cubicle thinking of when you'll next visit. I've been on both ends - where I've been there and a girl has changed allegiance to me (probably because I was around and the other guy was in the UK) and where I haven't. This guy is young, a break of a year or two isn't going to hurt him. He plainly thinks about Thai girls all the time. I'd say learn the language, get over there and see the whole choice.

I hope and don't intend to answer for Phil, but the subject should be spoken about but approached sensitively, with respect for others feelings. It happens, there is no two ways about it. I agree there is no need to boast or brag about what you have done or imply that someone is foolish.

In my case, and I only speak for me I learned from it and my relationship with Nat is all the stronger for it. It makes me realise how lucky I am.

GTG, my reference to 'enlightenment' was more of an all encompassing reference to experiences of life in LoS. A subject like this is not one where hiding one's light under a bushel will serve any purpose. However, I agree that smutty asides are unwarranted.

I do agree with LWATG that living with a Thai lady 24/7 for a few years will make the "do I, or don't I" decision a whole lot easier.

That would be my dream I think colin - to be married to a lovely Thai girl, have a house in LOS and one in the UK, never have to worry about the cost of hotels/accomodation ever again hehe

I think you need to decide on what would be the best way to make this dream a reality, and how long you can invest in making it happen. Moving to Thailand and teaching English is unlikely to make it happen unless you have some meaty inheritance on the way but it might certainly help you to decide what the most important aspect of all this is. Is it this particular girl, is it the whole experience of being n Thailand, is it more to do with frustration or dissatisfaction with what you are doing now?

Obviously there are members here who have taken the long-term view and are working towards retirement, preferably as early as possible, in Thailand and there are some who have already made this a reality. At your age, and the way you are buzzing at the moment, I can't see you being prepared to follow that route.

Something that might appeal, which falls between the two and relates to what you've said about your interests, would be to do a PGCSE and qualify as an Economics/Business Studies teacher. Get a couple of years experience in the UK under your belt and you have a ticket to the world, teaching in international schools with decent pay and benefits (housing, medical insurance etc) Obviously while you are teaching in the UK you would also have plenty of holidays to spend in Thailand/Asia!

Umm yes and no - I work for a major bank in London selling and arranging corporate mortgages over the phone (if that sounds dull, that's because it is!) I don't think it could be classed as a callcentre role, but tbh with the amount of time I spend punching in digits and bashing the phones, it might as well be!

Your ex-gf's dad sounds like a charmer btw (although drinkers are better than gamblers). I've lost count of the number of times a Thai girl has told me her parents are 'too old' to work and they've turned out to be in their forties. I was reflecting on this, watching the Jubilee, watching the Queen and Prince Philip having to stand on that cold boat for hours. I'd call that working (doing what you'd rather not do) and they're 86 and 91, aren't they?!

I don't think I've said that, have I? It is, however, the most obvious, simplest, solution. Better than finding a new girl every 6 months/2 years, going through a visitor visa process, moving her here, finding out what she's really like over a period of years (longer because it won't be continuous), her going back, going with another guy (presumably she does know others)...

Nick, you've been around here for long enough to know that the chances of a calm, considered debate on a topic as sensitive as that are pretty slim. If I am one of those 'certain people' that you refer to then I don't think there is anything in my attitude that I would regard as self-righteous but, with my Mod's head on, those 'shades of grey' (have you been reading the book?) sound scary and it is much easier to deal with black and white.

I don't think anyone is really pretending the P4P scene doesn't exist, it's just that I don't think that this is an appropriate place to discuss it and I can't think of a situation where it would bring much to the debate. For example, it isn't directly relevant to this thread but LWATG and others have managed to raise issues which are relevant whatever the background of the subjects without alienating some of the membership.

I do think that one of the reasons that such issues quickly become so contentious is the attitude of 'certain people' towards relationships with a background in P4P, who sometimes seem to see them as inferior to their own and are all too quick to stress the respectable, educated backgrounds of their own partners.
