Good. I went to Maya Bay at Phi Phi Leh a few years ago and it was a mess.

We went to Koh Phi Phi (Don) while we were there we wanted to pay our respects at the Tsunami Memorial, surprising how few people knew where it was located, lots of people working there were Burmese and did nt know where it was, but it was not very well kept when we found it, hopefully that has improved, we gave Maya Bay a wide birth...

I was caught up in the Tsunami, it was a close thing really. We used to go to a memorial service here on the beach every year, but it's become less and less observed now so we don't bother, just really take a moment on the day to remember the unlucky ones. I think most of the locals that were here prefer not to think about it and the many of the tourists don't even know about it. So I think most of the memorials are not taken care of. If you are interested in that type of thing Bangkok Hospital has a very nice and moving exhibition on the first floor, and Phuket Aquarium has a good factual display.

Khao Lak has a memorial too where the Thai Navy ship got washed inland. It is quite some way inland, next to the main north south road. To me it gives a real feel of the power of the Tsunami.

It's a shame the way of the world sees the closure of beaches. Back in April we saw the sudden closure of Boracay Island in the Philippines. I don't dispute tourists are partly to blame. However i do fear the locals are just as bad or worse. I have often seen coaches parked up at the far end of Beach Road, Jomtien. I've lost count the amount of times I've seen the drivers tip bin loads of rubbish over the sea wall. Absolutley no respect for their country. There seems to be a culture here of dumping rubbish anywhere they please
