Default UK passport renewal - adding up to 9 months - not anymore

Nothing official but word on a money saving website is that from the 10th September 2018 any remaining time (up to 9 months) on the old passport will not be added on to the new passport.

    It's Official:
Passports with validity over 10 years (5 years for children)

Since 2001, some adult British passports were issued with a validity longer than 10 years. This is because if you renewed your passport before it expired you were allowed to have the time left on your old passport added to your new passport. The maximum validity period possible was 10 years and 9 months. This means you can’t use the expiry date to check if your adult passport will be valid under the new rules.

From the beginning of September 2018 extra validity is no longer added to passports and the maximum validity for a new adult UK passport will be 10 years, and for a child passport will be 5 years. We have made this change to follow recommendations set out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and to help provide clarity about passport validity in the Schengen area in the future.

This was bought up in the House of Commons today as to why this has been done and without MPs getting oversight of this. Many countries require you to have at least 6 months validity left on your passport. So now instead of a passport valid for 10 years it will only be valid (for many countries) for 9 years and 6 months, so you will lose 6 months every time you apply.

    MPs have asked for clarification.

As in the post from Vinny its a Schengen thing apparently as they will not accept passports from a 3rd country (which we will be) with a validity of more than 10 years?
Seems they may have been a bit late with it implementation as there will be passports valid for over 10 years by the time we are a 3rd country.

I'm wondering about this, as apparantly Thai passports are changing as well because of Schengen (which may well disappear in due course) and it made me wonder whether there has been, as I assumed, international agreements abput passports and whether the EU's requirements have made everyone change to comply?
