    Hello there...

Well seems like a while since I posted on here and asked for some advice

Su and I are just starting to plan our hols to LOS next year

Probably be around March sometime (hopefully not so busy then, and I reckon we may get some better deals )

We have been quite a few places around LOS, but not too Phuket yet and would like to give it a try, but not sure on which area would be best for us (if any)

Maybe you could help with some suggestions please ?

Hopefully phuket will be for us, we like the quiteness of Koh Chang and nightlife of Samui/Pang Nang, and not too keen on crazyness of Pattaya anymore. So somewhere in between all this would be good.

The is the sort of thing we're after is... beach front hotel/hut/bungalow, not right in middle of it all. But near enough (short motorbike trip down the road) to nightlife and decent restaurants when we want it. Price anything up to 3000B/night.

    Many Thanks
    Sy n Su

    phuket! that's brilliant
We have been there more than 10 times, before and after tsunami. Just been there last year around end of november, it's lovely, would recommended!
I think you can find everythings overthere, nice and quite or fun night out. We always stay at Kata beach because it's not too crazy for night club or bar girl place. Also at night sometimes we would love to have some fun, we always went to the other beach to check it out.
anyway, you can go there all year round, it doesn't matter about high or low seasons. It was rain couple times when we were there but it's come and gone, dont worry about it much.
if you two want to pay more cheap price for accomodation, between may to aug will be the best.
will recommend kata beach (Kata Beach Resort, Kata Palm Resort) if you got limited budget, give a try on Kata Poolside Resort.

    cheers

I second that. Phuket is definitely worth a week or two. I have always stayed in Kata beach. As said, it is more of a family resort and you can get a taxi/tuk tuk to more vibrant places when you feel like visiting them.

Phuket is big enough to give you many options and great variety. Enjoy!!

I didn't like Phuket. Krabi is the same scenery but cheaper and quieter.

Yes also liked Phuket when we went and we also stayed at Kata beach in a hotel called tropical garden resort (see trip report on trip advisor under my username here).

Kata is good because its quieter than karon and patong but only 15 mins away max in an inexpensive tut tut to get there so you can benefit from the nightlife when you want.

Agree with all the above. You can also use Phuket to travel to Phi Phi, Hong Island etc.

I've been to Koh Chang about 4 times and Chaweng in Samui about 6 or more. I think you're trying to find that elusive place which is quiet enough to relax, but with enough to do so you don't get bored

So Kata could be what you are looking for. It has a beautiful beach, a few bars (of the non-girly type) and a couple of half-decent restaurants. I stayed at Mom Tris Boathouse, which is famous for it's (expensive) but great food.

    http://www.boathousephuket.com/

I wouldn't pay full price for a room there which can be £100 upwards. But if you book lastminute you can get a good deal direct with the hotel.

If you want to push the boat out stay at The Chedi.

    http://www.ghmhotels.com/

I haven't stayed there but I did have a look at the hotel and the beach. At the moment you can get rooms for just over £50! I've never seen them below £110 and I've been looking for 3 years.

If I ever get married...maybe I'll treat myself!

Patong is like a mini-version of Pattaya. Although I did stay at the Amari there which was a cracking hotel, 5 minutes in a Tuk-tuk from the centre of Patong.

    Enjoy your trip

Wow, that's a bit strong fellow Brummie

They were only asking a question, the same as I would for England if it is somewhere that I did not know of.
Yeah sure I (and loads of others) have heard of Blackpool but there are loads of places that I am not aware of and would want to seek advice about if thinking of going there for a holiday.

And I think you will find Sy is NOT an ex-pat he is living in England hence is opening post of

Gary ,you,ve got to clear something up for me
Where were you born? I ask because of(a) the reference to a 'fellow' brummie(b)the inference that you are a Man U fan because thats where you were born...Brummieland is only where you work..and (c)you mentioned you grew up in Slough

Help me out here...plenty of regional identities.
Your not from 'gypsy' stock are you?

"Fellow" Brummie as that is where I am residing at the moment but certainly not born and bred

No inference, I am definitely a Man U fan
And I don't believe I have ever claimed to be born in the home of the great Red Devils .

I thought I said near Slough

And I don't live in a tin box on wheels

And if only you had looked up (or remembered) a few other of my posts, you would have got the best clue of all:
    "I can't read and I can't write, but I can 'alf drive a traca"
And as you can't quite pick up the accent from typing I was born in Bu

Only one person who should be embarrased here mate and he's got a blue nose.

I have a wife and many thai friends who have never been to Phuket and do not wish to since the tsunami. So ask them any question you like about where to stay in the area they would not have a clue. Similar to Brum really, i only live 15 miles away from Brum but rarely go there so if someone asked me where to stay i would not know. I have been to Thailand more times than Brum in the last 3 years.

Until now I thought Chang meant elephant, maybe I was wrong and it has a double meaning!

    Sy,

I too have been looking for recommendations on Phuket, but unlike you I have already been there so I must really need to get a life. Last time stayed just North of Patong, with a free shuttle service into the town. Can't recommend any hotels, but will say there is plenty to do and trips around the islands, including "James Bond" Island. There was also the Fantasia show which we both enjoyed. A couple of words of warning though, the sea is lovely and warm, but there can be strong waves and currents (I got picked up by a wave and thrown onto the beach) and the sun is very strong, you can burn to a crisp in an hour Found it to be a great place to visit and hence why going back again.

    Enjoy.

    Err...I second those sentiments...

My gf works on a cruise ship. She has been all around the world - the Med, Carribean, Alaska, California, Mexico and Hawaii...

But you know what...she's never been to Phuket
