Mind Your Language

Many privately run English courses are available throughout the UK though these can be very expensive and not necessarily better than those offered by state run courses.

There are two main types of English courses for non-English speakers, available in Colleges, Universities and Libraries throughout the country:

These are ESOL (a course designed for UK residents) and EFL (for visiting students).

In addition, there are several websites which offer free English lessons for speakers of other languages.

The Rosetta Stone's Dynamic Immersion method works by simulating the natural language learning process we all experienced as children. No translation. No memorisation. No drills or lists. With instruction exclusively in the target language, you start thinking in the new language from the very first lesson. The association of pictures, native speaker voices and texts allows you to master basic vocabulary quickly. And this in turn acts as a foundation on which to build words, phrases, sentences, and grammatical structures, still in the target language only.

EFL is available to anyone and is ideal for foreign nationals who are visiting the UK on a tourist, work or student visa. Fees for this type of course are around £100 to £150 per week and course lengths vary from 3 to 50 weeks. There are many different courses available to suit your current ability or circumstances. If you are a resident in the UK, however, ESOL courses often cost much less and may be more suitable for your needs.

The English in Britain database includes over 1,600 English language courses offered throughout the UK by more than 300 schools and colleges. You can search the database, contact the schools and colleges, visit their web sites, and book a course all from this web site.........
