View Full Version : Heron Pub, Paddington [Thai Restaurant]

Sometime later this week me and the gf are hoping to hear back about her visa and her first visit to stay with me here in London. Somewhat premature therefore, but I have spent this boring afternoon googling around to find any Thai/Isan type places we could eat or drink. (not the generic Thai restaurants you see dotted around everywhere, something for expat thais.)

To my surprise I have stumbled across the "Heron" in Paddington, not far from where I am. This is a basement restaurant serving Isan food, has Isan Kareokee and the menu is in Thai!!

4454

Every review describes it as impossible to believe you are in London. (with the stuffy heat, Thai menu and kareokee i can see why.)

Anyone had any experience of here? Positive?

I think this is the place that Nick/PriorityPress has been visiting and raving about - have a look for his thread about 'Thai restaurants in London'.

Yep...you can't go wrong here:thumb:

Go downstairs at the weekend (you may have to book).

Basement of a pub but great food.

Been about 6 times in the last 3 months.

I think they went to town...

15 of us went for my birthday and the food was £220.

£20-25 for food easy.

Interesting to read about the Addies and Taste of Thai restaurants and their packed Kareokee clubs. If, as the writer says, it is packed with very wealthy Thai students, would 2 lowly Issan girls (her friend is here also) get a positive or hostile reception?

I know Thais can be very classed based but not sure how that translates when they are abroad?

Some funny comments, also a suggestion they only want Thai customers, illegal I should think.

Tried to go last night and the place has been closed because of a “cronic mice and cockroach infestation”.

Very authentic.

Im entertaining my parents that weekend. Perhaps a useful introduction to show them Isan people are mental :-p

On a serious note if its a success why not make it a monthly thing? I assume many posters will be attending the Carabao gig on the 27th May? Could potentially make a day of it, go here first for food and drinks before heading over to the gig.

I'm working on the 28th, head out to Thailand on the 30th.

I'm in the process of swapping my shifts, so if I can get a sensible work schedule, I'll be up for going to the Heron.

Failing that, me and the wife will be back on the 30th May/1st June, so any time after that would be good too.

Sounds like it's a place that we could all get to without too much hassle. :)

Daniele we were in luck when we went, got the last 2 seats in the house. It was packed. That said you could just have a drink and wait for a table but probably easier to book.

On Saturday it seems to be peak time for food from 6 - 9 and then empties out a bit. At about 11.30/12pm it fills up again with all the restaurant workers going for kareokee and a drink after work.

We're planning on going on the 16th anyway, as I won't have another weekend off work for quite some time.

I'm sure it won't be the last time we go there, so if there's another date in the future that people want to meet up on, we can do that as well.

Great night but my head hurts, my bank balance even more! Came in a bit heavier on the wallet than Kevs - £120 for 2 people!

£4.50 a shot is outrageous really, even more galling is its £3 upstairs! For those that arent aware, food and drink downstairs (in the Thai part of the bar) is on average 25% more expensive, often much more. In a total role reversal from Thailand, the farrangs pay less than Thais for the same food and drink! For anyone just going for food, and not worried about the Thai atmosphere or karaoke, eating upstairs will save you money.

Money aside it was great to meet the guys off here and hope it can become a regular occurence :)

bifftastic
17th Jun 2012, 18:08
Yeah, it was kind of expensive. But that's London for you :)

Next time maybe we should eat upstairs and nip down for the lock in/karaoke later on?

It didn't really liven up down there till the after hours crowd turned up.

Overall, a good night and great to put faces to the posters from the forum. Hopefully it will become a regular forum meet up.

livingwithathaigirl
17th Jun 2012, 22:37
Yep, the best part was meeting guys from the forum. And, as usual, seeing the wife react to things in the UK. Mind you, I'm not used to it yet either, having spent so long in Thailand and I didn't really rate the food, probably because of that. Too much lime, not enough chilli. With the som tams I just kept thinking back to the tastier stuff I got for a tenth of the price a few weeks ago a hundred feet from our condo. ;)I probably shouldn't even try Thai food in places other than Thailand anymore, apart from the stuff made by the wife, because I'm bound to be disappointed both by taste and prices!

Buses are a lot more high tech than I remember them. Night bus crowd was 'interesting' for the wife too. ;)

Belfastmatt's far too good at singing to do karaoke! (As is Biff's wife.)

Id suggest maybe making it a monthly thing. No doubt everyone couldnt (or would want to) every month, but there would surely be demand for at least half a dozen to do so.

I thought they watered my som tam thai down compared to the missus's som tam pu palaa too, although she repeated my order, to make it very spicy. The waiter/waitress (wasn't paying too much attention but think it was a tom) asked her to confirm and had we been here before, so I reckon it was watered, as with so many establishments that are used to farangs. The pu palaa one was a bit weak too but not as weak as the thai. I'm guessing that if you go there as one farang in a group of 10 Thais you'll get spicier food than a 60/40 farang thai mix. I'm also guessing the food got less spicy when they translated the menu.

The customer service isn't exactly "great"...that "Tom" is a bit of a miserable so-and-so...

Why is it you never get a smile or "wai" outside of Thailand? The "disrespect" you get in most restaurants in the UK would get the waiters/waitresses fired in LOS.

I find the staff ok on the whole, not particularly friendly but not rude. Met the chefs a few times, including the Carabao gig and they are sound guys. Heres a few pics -

Visited Herron with my wife Saturday night and we were really disappointed, as already mentioned on here in a few places it is very expensive - £78 meal for two which included just 1 beer each !. The food was pretty average, not bad but nothing special and it's a bit dingy down there in the basement, I really couldn't recommend it...couple of much better Thai Restaurants in Shepard's Bush and Richmond (Hill Tribe).

Thanks for that . I have never been to Hilltribe . A quick google brought up some good reviews and one scathing one. What was your experience.

May well be out drinking in Richmond on Saturday night prior to the (thankfully now meaningless!) Spurs match. Will try to steer the lads in this direction.

Last post a bit off topic. Look forward to some reviews. Maybe in their own thread.

Are these meetings an annual thing, or just now and again?

Also, I'm in London on Friday and again next week for Chelsea (flower show, not football).

Any suggestions on a decent Thai restaurant?

Do you have any particular pubs in mind. Gordie? Richmond's my old stomping ground. Used to work there as well.

I'm really surprised

I've always found it pretty reasonable price-wise but haven't been for 6 months or so, so perhaps the prices have gone up?

I agree it's a bit dingy in the basement but that's part of the "authentic" Thai feel to me :D

Been to Esarn Kheaw and Jasmine in Shepherd's Bush both of which were ok but nothing special. The former is a bit of a dump really but Jasmine has had a very nice "makeover".

I don't really count Busaba EatThai but it's good for a quick bite.

My wife works in Westfield and her favourite place around there is Tian Fu.

I know they charged something like a tenner for a bottle of Tesco water, that still had the label on. Another member was charged £18 corkage for a bottle of wine he brought in.

Thanks - but you jest, methinks. You've pretty much dominated that all year. Pretty impressive actually.

£18.50 to be exact, but it was what they wanted to charge me. I, rather impolitely I seem to remember, declined :)

I think I asked them, in Thai, if they were either joking or crazy, had to be one or the other I thought.

Turns out it was the latter. I've never been back.

Sorry I thought you paid it. If you had paid the corkage you might have got the taxi they promised

No, we drank the champagne my friend had bought me for my birthday on the front steps of the Heron while we waited for the taxis they said they'd ordered to turn up, which as you said, didn't :)
