I've landed at Suvarnabhumi airport 7 times in 3 years and only one taxi driver has ripped me off, it was a taxi at the main taxi rank. I should have stood my ground and argued with him, but I had just been through long flight with a delay in Doha, all I wanted was a bed and some sleep, it was the first day of the ash cloud from Iceland, my flight was one of the last from Heathrow. The cost, 800 baht from Suvarnabhumi airport to Sukhumvit soi 18, rather expensive as it's normally about 200 baht.

Don't see why they had to build the transport 'hub' about a mile from arrivals. But also don't see why people (non thai) do not get the free shuttle bus to it. Proper taxis without rigged meters and buses and vans to all parts. It only takes a few minutes to get there. We normally get a 20 baht van from there to home as it's cheaper than the bus. A lot of people do not realise when a meter is rigged, would never get another taxi from the normal line at the airport.

I've only had good experiences with taxis from the airport, ok there was one driver who was a bit of a dimlo, but we got where we were going and he didn't rip me off

I've always gone to the taxi rank, never been even slightly tempted to take a taxi ride from some random person who walks up to me offering his services.

I've never used the transport hub either, I don't think it's widely known about really. I might give it a go when I'm there next (hopefully in November!). I mostly use the train into town these days.

Apparently there's a ฿20 baht deal going on for a limited time (off peak, I think).

I use the rank as well and let Dao sort it out as a Thai speaker although the one time she was late to the Airport I thought will get done as a farang but a call from wifey (actually in PHS at the time) sorted the driver out I think but seemed reasonable to Silom Hotel.

I've never been ripped off either since the taxi rank came along. I've got called in to try to arbitrate between taxi drivers and farangs at our apartment complex before when some farangs were saying they were being ripped off and were refusing to pay but, having seen the meter (220B odd), I thought they were whingeing over nothing and said so. It was par for the course, I'd done the same journey at least as much as them!

I'm not sure I even got ripped off when there were no taxi ranks and no meters in Bangkok taxis. So long ago, I can't remember! Taxis are one of the really good things in Bangkok. Perhaps even too many of them, not so good for drivers but good for passengers.

I'm now trying to guess where tribal_fusion and bristolgeoff stay. I used to know Sukhumvit 0-30ish like the back of my hand but staying with the wife put a stop to that! I'll not know hotels in the last 3-4 years.

    Tribal_fusion - Town House?

Town Lodge, soi 18, right at the end of the soi. It was ok, had a bar downstairs with 3 hostess girls.

Used taxi rank twice, once with mrs he had a rigged meter= 50% more on the clock. Second time there was 100 baht on the clock as soon as he moved off he explained he had to pay that to pick up at the rank, got out and went to departures and got one. And they have the nerve to charge you 50 baht fee on top , and for what exactly?
Train is a good option but do not recall seeing any signs for it last time I was there.

The Airport Rail Link is on the very lowest floor of the airport. Signs are, if I remember correctly, on the lifts. They're probably in other places as well mind, that's just where I saw them

You go down, walk down the slope to the ticket machines, through the barriers and down the escalator (or use the lift) to the platforms.

Out of arrivals, up to departures, walk right to the far end where the dropping-off taxis depart, stand there with my suitcase, a taxi will stop, I say "Pattaya, 1000฿", sorted.

Compared to places like HK and Singapore airports Bkk's is traveler unfriendly and still too many rip off merchants waiting to pounce. Look at HK, walk straight out to the buses going everywhere, not a mile away but right outside arrivals. In Singapore I was told by a taxi driver it was illegal for him to take a tip when I offered. Maybe Thailand should have been colonised by he Brits after after all?

I haven't had to get a taxi since Suvarnabhumi opened but used to do the same at Don Muang. Always got a much better deal that way.

Looks like you might have to find a new way out of departures in the future though Phil

AoT plans to install one-way gates by the end of this year to block passengers from exiting on the fourth floor

In PHS, if you phone the call centre then you have to pay 20 baht surcharge for their service.

So would imagine the 50 baht surcharge at Swampy is an administration fee for the good running of the rank. Without it, it would be sheer pandemonium.
