Default Digital Radio vs Freeview sound quality

    A bit of info really.

I listen to the radio a lot and have a cheap as chips digital radio in the kitchen . I wanted one for the living room also or even better a separate DAB receiver to go with my amp tuner cd etc.

Now these things a not cheap and I am pretty skint right now. I spent a lot of time reading about sound quality of Digital Radio. It turns out that save for BBC radio three the original concept of high quality digital has been so degraded by sampling at rubbish bit speeds that the quality even through a pricy receiver of DAB radio is really poor. Its not the reciever its the poor quality of the digital encoding.

I also found out that many of the digital radio channels are on freeeview and on freeview they are are sampled and transmitted at much higher quality than the digital radio.

So for high quality ( and it makes a difference listening to the spoken voice as well as classical music, rock and everything ) listen on freeview and run the sound through an existing hi fi. I should also say that good hi fi amps costs next to nothing on ebay as they are under used by the ipod generation.

ps I have an I pod and mac computers but for sound quality I convert to analogue and go through my old fashioned amp

I route everything through my pc into my amplifier via a m-audio soundcard. I don't listen to radio very often, but I prefer the quality of my amp and speakers. I don't use standard pc soundcards, the m-audio 2496 has two phono connectors, that plugs into my Technics amp and also my Hercules mp3 DJ mixer, two Ruark speakers for a quality sound. I do my own DJ mixes on my pc and have also used software on my pc to produce my own dance music, so quality reproductive is needed.

I'm not sure if this helps you or not.

No Thai music, just techno, progressive house and trance.

Maybe not a Thai-UK anthem, but seriously good visuals and tune. Posted this last year only for Dave to promptly inform that I'd posted in wrong music thread.

An interesting piece of music Tribal. Goes on a bit though doesn't it? The first thirty minutes seem a bit monotonous IMO, but it does get better and a bit more lively after that. I'm no connoisseur of house/garage/trance, but I assume that it was trance according to the tab in the corner? It sounds like it would be the sort of thing played in one of those foam-filled dens of iniquity on Ibiza perhaps? Not that I've ever been (Club 18-30/Una paloma blanca was my era for that sort of holiday). I do actually have a couple of CD's with that sort of stuff on that I take to the gym in the mornings. I was put on to it by Harvey; it's excellent jogging music. Nice photo by the way - like the flowers .

Thanks. The first 30 minutes was techno and progressive house, which is slower and not as lively, the last hour was full on trance. I haven't been clubbing in the UK for 2 or 3 years, but Narz club in soi 23, Bangkok has a trance room which plays this type of music, I used to go there quite a lot when I was staying in Bangkok, the Thai's seemed to be into the music.

    Flowers in the photo?

I thought you meant the cover art, that was some plastic flowers in my apartment in Ratchada soi 17, Bangkok.
