    Default Udon Thani visit

Returned last week from Udon Thani area.
My TGF Morn had spent 110 days here on a visitors visa on her first overseas trip.
We've had a great time and done many things with family and friends. I have been really suprised how everyone has been with Morn and especially my 75 year old mum. They just hit it off and Morn stayed over when i had to work away a few nights. Had a family holiday down in Cornwall too.

Anyone who knows Udon Thani airport from past visits may well remeber the old B747 next to the Terminal that was used for technical training...well its gone. I was previously there in January so i imagine it was scrapped unless they rebuilt it!
The airport seemed a lot busier than i remember previously and it has a lot of Bangkok airways advertising inside. May be adding it to their destinations from BKK?

After the long Journey from the UK we stayed at the new Siam Grand Hotel before venturing to Morns family home the next morning plus it saved me a days car hire.

The Siam Grand is about 95% finished but its way out of town so if anyone intends going i'd give that place a miss if you want somewhere city based. I like the Centara or the Paradise (Under renovation atm)

Anyway needless to say the visit went well, drank plenty of ice cold beers, got my in laws drunk on Scotch whisky and ate grasshoppers for the first time.
It's full steam ahead for a New year wedding in her village....and then Honeymoon in Bangkok (submit the Spouse Visa) and Phuket.
    Cheers
    Kingy

the development, UD Town has been completed quite some time ago, turned out nice and doing well. Justin sold, as usually and left the country. I doubt if he will return, though rumoured to. Now have 2 McD, as the Chareonsri shopping mall was taken over and is now a nice Central Plaza / Centara Hotel. You wouldn't reconize the place now. Building everywhere, along w/congestion. Quite a few large condos in the works, adding 3000+ total units, one across from UD Town, w/1400 units. Rush hour is gridlock already. 2 other shopping centers added, large LandMark, and a smaller IT / Nevada Plaza across from UD Town, the latter being crap, and starving for customers.

    OT...........nice report and congrats.

Had personal snapshots of Udon and seen how it has grown since when first met the ex thru to wedding and then visit with the kids etc. Now divorced so may not get back there for a few years.

I'm sure I saw the 747 whilst our Nok Air plane was at the end of the runway, but tucked away, same as the usual fighter planes, 2 nice helicopters on view though and one looked "Russian" to me. This was last month.

The McDonalds across the road from Aek Udon opened up over 4.5 years ago, but this trip was amazed to see the changes, Robinson's Mall now has an Ice Rink as well as cinema on the top floor and was a great place to spend more than one shopping trip (the Mall, not the rink, though was nice to go in and see some very talented skaters as well as kids with penguins as stabalizers (not real ones Marcus )) There was also a nice McDonalds in there too as well as many other eateries. Best meal place we had though was outside in the night market, had a couple of nice meals there. Stayed in the Irish Clock (new owners) and the Charoen, the pools in the Charoen were the reason for staying there) was a massive Police Convention being held there and so very safe place to stay, though I'm sure they were trying to fine me for ploughing through the pool or was it holding up the traffic. Udon has been transformed, but not always for the best. Loved the stay there though as looks like others do too Oh and a new football ground (stadium would almost be the right word) down between Aek Udon and Big C.

Nice McDonalds - Surely that's an oxymoron?

Amazed they have an ice rink now, I'd love to see that.

I went to Udon recently and was amazed by the development also. I used to go each year and stay in the Clock or the small hotel down the road. I don't think I'd find it again now. One thing is for sure, there's some serious, serious money up there and it looks like the wealth is being spent.

We're moving in the next few months for the same reasons already mentioned regarding Udon. Our town has become a monster. The traffic has doubled, building shop fronts and apartments on a frog's backside if it stays still long enough, people everywhere, noise pollution through the roof, you name it we've got it. Sadly with all this investment there's little if any originality in the designs. Empty shop front - Empty shop front - Coffee shop - Empty shop front.......
