Yes Tobias thanks it's very useful.

Flicking between that and Kayak, did want to fly direct but its coming out at 1,900 quid - if I fly Emirates from Gatwick much more reasonable 1,100 and without the Heathrow hassle (went there Tuesday night got stuck behind lorry fire for 3 hours...god I hate Heathrow I don't know how you manage it so often).

I really like LHR ... but I tend to fly in to it rather than drive! Perhaps 3/4 times a year I arrive at LHR by car. I do hate the security and international flight connections though.

The Matrix is good for working out the full price for all travellers - including the infant fare. It's a fantastic piece of software that has saved me a great deal over the last few years.

I'm loving Matrix more and more, its very powerful - I love how I can remove long stopovers and home in on what i want.

Just booked my first holiday to Thailand in 10 years (very expensive with wife and 2 kids). Tried Kayak, Skyscanner and Momondo as recommended by the Money Expert website - some reasonable prices but everytime I tried to click through the price either increased dramatically or I was directed to another airline (trying to book Eva non-stop) such as Finnair with a 27hour stopover! These are so called live prices. Gave up in the end and booked with the same company I used in 2004 - WestEastTravel. Cost me the equivalent of £845 each (my youngest is now 12 and counts as an adult!) including taxes and £66 for using a credit card. We are flying out on 20th July and coming back 5th August (constrained due to school holidays). Just checked Tobias's Matrix - Thai are £846 (but we had discounted them as the time of departure doesn't work for us) and Eva are £1547 so I reckon I got a good deal.

    Book early or book late?

I will be working but Sea wants to take young Christopher to see grandma around new year. Book the day before? Sounds desparate and it I was an airline I would charge a top price. Book 8 months in advance and if I was an airline I would think pay a top price they have plans and are organised and have a budget and months to save.

    Early bird or laggard ?

It will be pricier than you and your wife remember.

I would just look every week and when you find something around the £550-£600 mark book it.

I always book my flights as soon as I can and it has been very rare over the last 10 years that I could have got it cheaper than when I booked.

You cannot book using the Matrix, it shows you what fares are available and with which airline. You would book through a travel agent or with the airline direct.

Flights not available at advertised price. Not sure if I was too late or they just weren't there but it is good to get an idea of what is around.

If you click the 'Only show flights and prices with available seats' the only results will be real -time fares that are actually available at the point of search.

If that box isn't 'checked' then it will list published fares loaded on the GDS.
