    Default tax returns for wife

    Hi there
My wife is here on a spouse visa & i am currently helping her fill in her tax form for the 15-16 tax year.
She is self employed & her earnings totaled just over £8000 for this period.
After completing the form it calculated that she owes £134 for the 2015-16 tax year
I was a bit shocked as i understood it you could earn up £10000 before paying any tax.
    is this correct?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

Believe your correct in your thinking. Might be worth double checking your entries.

Are you sure it's not NIC? Just a thought.

No not NIC's they are £123 for the year. Been over the form time & time again & it still comes up with £134.
the form seems alittle strange though the only thing i can think of is that maybe there are 2 forms one for income tax & one for business tax.
    thanks for your help.

Her total income for the year is 8091 so she will pay class 4. i think the form we are filling in is the wrong one for business tax not income tax

are you registered for the government web site, if so should be a link to complete a tax return, has to be done by end of the month, if you are unsure give them a ring on the helpline. 0300 200 3300 outside UK +44 135 535 9022

spoke to them on the helpline today.... they told us to submit the form which is what we did.

from what they said it looks like NIC's but they can't tell us for sure until they receive my wife;s tax return
after they have i will contact them again
    thanks everyone for your help

I remember telling my accountant last year that the monthly payment was no longer being taken. He told me that I had to pay it at the end of the tax year and they no longer take it on a monthly basis. Hence my comment about the £132 payment being NIC.
