    Default Friend in transit trouble

    Hi everyone
Just had my wifes Thai friend on video call from Vienna in tears.
She had booked flights to Thailand from MAN via Frankfurt, change to Vienna and then onto Bkk
The return is Bkk to Vienna and then MAN. 2 Thai Nationals inc the son and her British husband.
She bought the tickets from an online travel agent. Never advised on visas she says.
They got through FRA ok but Austria say they do not have a transit visa.
Taking a quick google around i see as they are travelling with her husband they don't require one for Austria but Germany does so i don't know how they managed to transfer their.
Now Austria have let them travel onward but say they cannot re-enter on the return journey.
I told them to seek advice at the Austrian consulate in Pattaya or contact the Embassy in BKK to get the ok to travel home in January. Other option is to buy another ticket.
Anyone taken the route via Vienna from the UK? Did you have any Transit visas?
    Any thoughts on this guys?
    Thanks
    Kingy

I would say whoever told her she needed a transit visa is wrong, Thailand is not listed as a country requiring a transit visa for Austria and she is married to a British and therefore by default E.U citizen.

Looks like they are in Thailand now as Austria let them proceed. couldnt have been a huge problem if they agreed to that.

I have looked at the TIMATIC information and from what I can see they would have encountered a problem in Germany.

I am not an immigration expert but do not see why they will be unable to return via Vienna as long as they do not go via another Shengen country.
May be a good idea if possible to speak to the Austrian consulate in BKK

This is the outbound visa rules then the return, sorry its a bit long winded, the IATA travel site is very good and is the same info but laid out a bit better.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.
I had a response from the Austrian Embassy pretty quickly this morning and they confirm they should be able to return and i will get that email over to my friend and his wife/son. Transit Visa not required.
I looked at the German entry requirement and this is the issue. They required a short term visa (Transit)
On the outbound they somehow got into Germany and exited the International transit zone and flew between the 2 Schengen states of Germany and Austria therefore entering Austria illegally. Then they transferred back through international passport control where they had the problem.
They did need a transit visa for Frankfurt but never had an issue getting through.
The return sectors are BKK to Vienna and then onto Manchester so i think they should go for it. What do you think?
Incidentally i once went through Frankfurt with my mate who is only 5ft 3" and im 6ft with a slightly larger build. we somehow presented each others passport by mistake and only noticed once we were both through Passport control.

I would have thought that as they are travelling with the UK (EU Citizen) Husband/Father then the EU Right of Freedom of movement for EU Citizens and their Non EU Family members would have trumped all other EU states rules and regulations, but it seems that is not the case :-( another EU benefit that misleads or causes so many issues!
