The Trinity GESE SELTs at CEFR levels A1, A2 and B2 remain approved as do the various IELTS SELTs.

How do you think that Trinity and IELTS "won the contract"?

There are many providers of English language tests in the UK, some of which were approved for UK immigration purposes until 2015 (remember the ETS scandal?).

Trinity and IELTS have been approved SELT providers for UK immigration purposes since 2015 because they demonstrate that they deliver both the required test specification and the multi-layered security for candidates which is required by the Home Office.

IELTS is jointly owned or Managed by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge English (UNI of Cambridge).
Unsurprisingly they are offered through their offices and locations. Various countries have used these tests for many years for immigration purposes IE UK - Australia - NZ - Canada etc, also the academic tests are used to test Non native English speakers for entry to Universities world-wide.
But you can learn anywhere you dont need to use a British Council course, but the actual exam would need to taken at a authorised exam centre IE as per the list.
The other main tests are Trinity College, the reason why they use these is simply they are tried and tested over many years.
My main gripe is why the GOV change the goalposts, I am sure years ago there were test centres in Chiang Mai and Phuket either BC or authorised by BC.
