    Cool Trip to manila

First off this is an enquiry about flying from Bangkok to Manila for a few days, if the mods deem this to be in the wrong section or not relevant on a thai forum please delete..

Im in khon kaen for approx a month in October, while I'm there an old work mate who lives in phillipines is finally getting married and he has invited me and the gf to attend, it happens to be while I'm in Thailand so it's very convenient to go, the gf doesn't want to go as her dad is not that well, I have looked at flights from bkk to Manila with Thai airways the fares not to bad at just about £200 return.....anybody got any tips for travelling in Manila or any hotel recommendations, where do you get your pesos, can you get a good rate at the airport in Manila as you do in swampy ( downstairs at the exchange booths)? I think his city is quezon but the wedding is in manila which is where most of his/ her family's live.
any advice on anything phillipines related would be much appreciated, I'm only going to be there for four days or so so can't do much in the way of travelling.
    many thanks

Nice to see your going to get about, Quezon City is in the north of Metro Manila with the airport being in the south near Pasay / Makati, my recommendation of areas to stay in Manila would be Ermita / Malate near the bay lots of hotels, bars and restaurants and also some of the main tourist attractions IE Rizal Park, National Museum and Spanish Colonial Churches etc some parts of Manila remind me of Mexico City, I nearly went back this year as I was going to re-new some certifications at the Maritime Academy across the bay (by ferry) but was able to re-new in Selangor (Malaysia) cheaper in the end, I would have stayed in Malate before and after. My 1st impressions were of a chaotic and loud place with drivers using one hand on the wheel and one on the horn, if you use a taxi from the airport be sure to know your route, study google maps and print off, do not let the meter taxi driver know its your 1st time in Metro Manila or there is a strong possibility of a"long way round" to the hotel or "I got mixed up about your hotel, but I know where it is now" conveniently for them the meter is ticking. There is a metro system which is cheap to get around with some female only carriages (or used to be) avoid straying into these.
Philippines v China in the World Cup Qualifiers (2022) in mid-OCT sometimes home games are played in Rizal Memorial Stadium in Malate (not Rizal Park) other times on a different island.

Thanks sisaket for the reply, very helpful as always, what do you do about changing pounds to peso, a lot of info says the exchange booths on the street give the best rate followed closely by the banks....don't talk about football not after West Ham's start to the season 5-0, I think we gave Adrian to Liverpool and forgot to replace him!!

I personally would get some at Super Rich before I went if only going for a short length of time using baht to stop any messing about (I dont have any £ cash), yes exchanged booths offer better rates, even better away from tourist districts, but need to weigh up there are more pickpockets, con artists, scams etc in Metro Manila than other SE Asian metropolitan areas, I would use ATMs as a back up (if needed) and inside a bank if possible or exchange in a bank (I have read petty theft rates have gone down last year).
I was in Shanghai a few weeks ago to see NUFC beat West Ham 1-0 which was a surprise after seeing NUFC getting stuffed a few days earlier by Wolves in Nanjing : Premier League Asia Trophy.

Hope you enjoy more than I did, only country I've been to where I never felt safe.

I haven't replied to this topic until now as I've never been to Manila, but as Prikphet says he never felt safe I assume he felt unsafe in Manila.

My one and only trip to the Philippines was five years ago and I flew from Bangkok to Cebu (return). From Cebu it is easy to get boats to the islands and I really liked Bohol. I certainly never felt unsafe in any of the places I visited. I would definitely go again if the chance arises. I'm no expert but I would imagine each island, or the various parts of the mainland, have their own character and feel. What may impress one visitor may leave another quite unimpressed. It's definitely a country to try for yourself rather than allowing others to deter you in one way or another. Having said that I am unlikely to practice what I preach, as if I go back I shall almost certainly avoid Manila and 'head for the hills'.
