There is a site offering air china via beijing, but there is a 9 hour stop over, presumably marooned in the transit lounge. I, assuming i would need a transit visa if I wanted to leave the bu8ilding ???

below is an extract from the website of the chinese embassy in washington dc, updated in 08/2007.

    http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/zgqz/t84248.htm

Visas are not required of aliens, who hold final destination tickets and have booked seats on international airliners flying directly through China, and will stay in a transit city for less than 24 hours without leaving the airport.

i believe it's possible to obtain a transit visa on arrival at beijing airport, though it's safest to check with air china, as this relaxation of the rules is fairly recent and perhaps not everyone is familiar with the new procedures.
