My nephew has arrived from thailand (feb 4 th 2008). speaking no english Art my nephew, and his mum Aporn (my sister inlaw), have found it impossible to get Art into any school in the maidstone area.he is 13 years old and a great kid, who deserves to be able to learn english. i have tried to find courses, even private lessons but with no success. Have you had a long chat with the Kent County Council admissions people? In particular, ask them about their FAIR ACCESS PROTOCOL which is designed to help you find a place quickly.

"If you have any questions about the Admissions process, please contact:

    The Admissions and Transport Team
Room 2.24, Sessions House, County Hall
    Maidstone, Kent ME14 1XQ
    tel: 01622 696565
    fax: 01622 696665
    email: kent.admissions@kent.gov.uk "

I presume he has been turned down because all the local schools are full? Not because of his lack of English? It might be more difficult in Kent because some of the schools are Grammar schools and so will be closed to him whatever happens - reducing your choice.

The School Admissions Code of Practice (2003) requires all authorities and Admission Forums to have In-Year Fair Access Protocols in place by September 2007. The protocols must cover all maintained schools and academies in the local authority (LA) area. They should ensure that access to suitable education is secured quickly for children who have no school place.
